Last night we were sitting out on our deck enjoying a cup of coffee when I saw this creature fluttering about our flower bed. It appeared to be a hummingbird but I had never seen one so small. Yet, the coloring resembled a moth. It was so intriguing. Andreas wanted to get some photos of it.
I figured it would be long gone by the time he got the camera but it hung out for a long time. Even more surprising, was how close we were able to get to it! Andreas took a round of photos and we went in to upload them right away and take a closer look. He described it as a flying shrimp. I couldn't wait to see that! And he was right! On the computer screen it did indeed look like a shrimp with wings! LOL...I decided to see if it was still out there and take some photos of my own, in a different camera setting to see if we couldn't get an even better look.
It was still there, quickly moving from one flower to the next. While I was outside getting tons of photos, Andreas was inside researching what it was. Turns out it is actually called a Hummingbird Moth. HA! Perfect, since those were exactly the terms we used to describe it (apart from flying shrimp)! Andreas found it very interesting that it wasn't native to ND. More to the Eastern and Southern states.
Anyway, here are some of the better shots for you to see. It was a fast little bugger so these were as good as we could get!
